Save Nottingham Central Library

Nottingham City Council has announced that it will sell the building on Angel Row that currently houses our Central Library. The property will be sold to a private developer who will turn it into office space.

Our city has been home to many great writers. Many wonderful writers live here today. Nottingham was recently named a UNESCO City of Literature in recognition of our past and present contributions. Yet during the week of the city’s ‘Festival of Literature’, the council made the decision to sell the Central Library without confirming whether or not the service will be continued elsewhere in the city centre. It is as yet unclear how widely the council consulted on these plans before making a decision. This is an alarming situation.

This is not just about famous writers past and present. It’s about the people who use the Central Library today and those who will use it in the future. This is about saving a library from an uncertain future.

Our fear is that a lack of clarity about the future of our library indicates a lack of clarity on the part of the council about whether or not such a service is needed. We say that our libraries are precious institutions and that we will campaign to keep a central library open.

This petition calls on the council leadership to clearly state that a central library will be retained and that there will not be a long period of interruption to the service. Additionally, we ask for confirmation that:

• no library staff will face redundancy;
• Local History and Archival material will remain easily accessible;
• library stocks will not be diminished;
• a programme of investment and renewal will be put in place.

Most importantly, we ask that regular library users are closely consulted on any and all future plans.

    This issue really drives home how far the dismantlement of our public infrastructure has gone.

    Please seriously re-consider this proposal to close the central library. For the sake of current users and for future generations this establishment must be kept open.

    I use the library regularly and we have not been consulted. The Council have allowed the library to run down and cut services within it. We must demand that the City Council fully fund Central Library by campaigning for additional income from the government not by taking money from other Local Nottingham services.

    I ought to continue to allow access to this building for the present and future

    What on earth are the council thinking?? Don’t they understand just how previous Nottingham’s central library is?!

    I use this library as a disabled person and have always found it provides me with a quality of life in my circumstances. It is indeed a lifeline for thousands of disabled people like me and closing it would be a massive insult to us all. We must stand together to fight the appalling threats to close it. Nottingham City Council must follow and respect their leader, Jeremy Corbyn’s defence of keeping this essential service open for all to be allowed to continue using and thoroughly enjoy. The threat to close it goes directly against the official grain of the Labour Party’s stance on fighting austerity and cuts in our essential public services. Education is a right and not a privilege to us all. Libraries across the UK have already suffered enormous damage and it’s now high time for all labour councillors, members of the Labour Party, trade unions and the public to stand up for our libraries and STOP endorsing the torie and new labour agenda to assault working class & middle class educational institutions and services. Central Library is a significant part of Nottingham’s educational public service and one of the oldest libraries in the East Midlands. Imagine the impact the closure of it would do to the peoples of Nottingham. My son uses it and relies upon it for his college education he will suffer the threat of closure and this would inevitably impact on his education too.

    Nottingham City Council hang your heads in shame – we will NOT allow you to do this and will block any attempt to close it down!

    Yours in disgust

    We cannot let this happen. Would like to know the progress of the petition. Am prepared to come to Nottm. and protest in person. Sorry! I don’t do Facebook or anything similar.

    Good luck
