The media lie to us. Everyone knows that. But it’s all we’ve got if we want to know what’s going on. Isn’t it?
Our mainstream media is owned by a handful of rich individuals who decide what we know, how it’s framed and what we should think. They create a narrative that suits them, not us.
With an anti austerity leader of the Labour Party we need a balanced media now more than ever. And with the rise of the internet and social media we have a window in which to create a new media which reflects our concerns, our priorities and our values.
The rise of media outlets like the Canary and Novara Media, and hyper local channels like The Bristol Cable, and the easy availability of these that the internet provides, mean it’s time to discuss how we shape the media world, and in turn the world around us.
Our generation have been stiffed. High property costs, student debt and low paying jobs are the norm for young people today, but you wouldn’t know there was a crisis if you read the mainstream press.
